Holidays in Alta Badia
Holidays in Alta BadiaThe holiday area Alta Badia lies between the Cir Group, the Sella Group, the Sassonger and the Fanes-Conturines Group, it comprises the vacation villages Colfosco, Corvara, Pedraces, S. Cassiano, La Villa and La Valle. The Ladin ethnic group live in this famous holiday region, they have their own language and traditions and are proud of them. The Ladins are known for their hospitality and also for the unique landscape of this holiday region rich in impressive natural beauties. In summer Alta Badia offers wonderful hikes in front of the picturesque scenery of the Dolomites and the nature park Fanes-Sennes-Braies. Also mountain bikers and cyclists can find numerous cycle tracks and tours. Every year the famous Dolomite Marathon takes place with over 7.000 participants from the whole world. There seems to be a special kind of harmony between old and new in this area, attained by the diligence of the mountain farmers that tend to this unique landscape and maintain it. The mountain farmhouses on the sunny hillsides lie close to one another in the original Rhaeto-Romanic form of settlement, not like in the other parts of South Tyrol where single farms predominate. The houses in these so called “Viles“ have a typical construction: the stonewalled basement has an upper structure made of wood. The stable is next to the living house and the walls and balconies are often richly decorated with ornaments, carvings and frescos. The holiday region also has its typical food specialities like the tasty “Panicias”, “Bales”, “Turtres” and “Crafuns”. In the Ladin Culture Institues Micura de Rüw with a library and exhibition halls in San Martino in Badia, you will receive information on the Ladin ethnic group in South Tyrol. The Castle Tor situated outside the village, houses the Ladin museum and gives an insight in the Ladin culture and tradition. Today Alta Badia is one of the largest ski resorts in South Tyrol with 130 km of well prepared slopes and over 500 modern ski lifts. It is also connected to the large ski resorts of the Dolomiti Superski, counting 12 resorts in all and 1.200 km of slopes. Alta Badia always hosts international winter sporting events like the World Cup races in alpine skiing. The area also offers peaceful walks and snowshoeing hikes through the snow covered landscape. It also offers over 35 km of cross country skiing runs and the ice rink in Corvara, moreover riding stables, fitness paths, a golf course and much more. |
