Gufyland - Bird Care Centre of Castel Tyrol
| | |
On the hill of Castle Tyrol, the sunny terrace of Merano that overlooks the panorama of Burggrafenamt and the entrance of the Val Venosta valley, there is a unique centre in South Tyrol: the Bird Care Centre of Castle Tyrol.
The centre's primary role is to treat injured birds and then reintroduce them in their natural habitat. Each year about 250 injured specimens are brought to the centre: about half of these may be released after medical treatment. The remaining birds unable to return to live in their natural environment remain in the centre and find a new home in one of the twenty-four aviaries. The birds can be watched by visitors, who largely contribute to the financing of the centre.
The two experts, Willy Campei and Florian Gamper, have projected large aviaries, designed for the different needs of the many species of birds of prey present and have taken care of the natural environment and have also restored it. The most fascinating part of the visit of the Bird Care Centre is the demonstration flight, which is made possible thanks to the favorable hill. Every day at 11.15 am and 3.15 pm (in winter only on Sundays and public holidays at 03.00 pm) various healthy birds are allowed to fly freely on the hill of Castle Tyrol (born in captivity and provided with regular certificate).
During the demonstration lasting approx. 40 minutes (depending on the weather conditions), visitors have the opportunity to see eagles, vultures, hawks, owls and buzzards in action and get to know them closely.
