The pretty holiday village Nova Levante (Welschnofen) lies at 1.180 m above sea level, on a sunny hill, surrounded by fields and forests, at the foot of the Rosengarten and Latemar massifs.
Due to the construction of the Val d’Ega street that was extended over the Passo di Costalunga pass as Great Dolomite Street, tourists came to the sunny high surface under the Costalunga pass from a very early time onwards. The first renowned hotels were already established at the end of the 19th century.

Already in those days the tourists admired the magnificent mountain scenery around the Carezza Lake (Lago di Carezza), belonging to the most beautiful mountain lakes in the Alps. The pallid rocks of the Latemar are reflected in the dark water. It is worthwhile taking a tranquil walk on the Elisabeth Promenade, the favourite promenade of the Austrian Empress Elisabeth (Sissi) who was often on holiday near the lake.
Dr. Theodor Christomannos, a great pioneer of tourism in South Tyrol, made the area around the lake to a world famous holiday resort with the Grandhotel Karersee. The Association of Alpine hotels wrote some inscriptions in German, English, French, Latin and Spanish. To enable the international guests to become acquainted with the sagas of the Rosengarten, Albert Stolz painted the famous legend of the fight of King Laurin in the ballroom of the Grandhotel Karersee.

Up until today Nova Levante – Lago di Carezza is still a popular tourist resort offering various recreational activities throughout the whole year. In summer you can discover the unique mountain landscape on one of the many walking paths or hiking trails and in winter the skiing area Nova Levante – Lago di Carezza offers 13 ski lifts and over 30 km of slopes, 16 km of cross country ski runs, an illuminated toboggan/slede run and a ski run that takes you right down to Nova Levante.
