Valle Isarco
Holidays in Chiusa in Valle Isarco
ChiusaThe picturesque town Chiusa (Klausen) lies at 525 meters above sea level under a cliff with a monastery enthroned above it. Chiusa was already the motive of a famous painting of Albrecht Dürer. Picturesque houses with oriels and towers line the tight main alley, the village is surrounded by steep hillsides with chestnut trees and vineyards with old manors. The monastery Sabiona was once the diocesan town which was then moved to Bolzano. Only in 1681 the castle was converted into today’s still existing Benedictine monastery. The oldest testimonies are for example the foundation wall of the Episcopal basilica of the 7th century and the circular wall and castle tower of the 13th century. The monastery Sabiona has a very sunny position and lies 200 m above Chiusa, it is a very popular destination for the faithful and for hikers. The town in the Valle Isarco valley is rich in treasures of art, it has many protected historical monuments, like for example the late Gothic parish church St. Andrew, the Apostle church, the old parish church St. Sebastian, the Loreto church and the Capucin church. The city museum can be found in the Capucin monastery, it houses the famous Loreto treasure and sacral treasures of art. |
