San CassianoThe pretty village San Cassiano (St. Kassian) lies at a height of 1.536 m above sea level, to the south east of La Villa at the foot of the majestic rock faces of the Conturines, the La Varella, the Settsass and the Lagazuoi. The popular summer and winter sporting resort is connected by a chair lift to the Piz Sorege (2.000 m), at its foot the high plateau of the Pralongià extends itself. The area of Armentarola is a good starting point for excursions in summer, in winter it is one of the most popular cross country skiing resorts. The "Pic' Museo Ladin“ has an exhibition on the culture, history and tradition of this unique mountain region. A separate part of the exhibition is about the famous cave bears of Conturines, the Ursus spelaeus. The museum exhibits bones and skeleton parts that were found in a cave in Conturines, it also has a collection of fossils of the lime and sedimentation zones of the Dolomites. Close to San Cassiano you can also find the famous geological stratums of San Cassiano, they testify volcanic occurrences and have many interesting fossils. |
